The CrossFit L1 Cert Doesn’t Make You a Coach
So what’s the upshot here? That every recent L1 grad is unqualified to coach? No. But here is what I wish for, as more and more people put their health and fitness in the hands of brand new CrossFit coaches across the world that are imbued with, perhaps, a false sense of security about their own qualifications:
- That box owners will apprentice these coaches in under the watchful eye of a more experienced coach before turning them loose on the general population. Don’t leave me alone with the class until you know that I know what the hell I am doing.
- That each new L1 grad commit to a lifetime of learning starting with the Monday immediately following their cert, and continually avail themselves of the wealth of knowledge that exists online in order to become better coaches. Admit you have a lot to learn and start learning it.
- That CrossFit HQ consider, even every-so-briefly, that perhaps in addition to an L1, that prior to opening an affiliate, some additional basic competencies be demonstrated. I am not sure how this might look, but I believe it’s a worthwhile discussion to have.Perhaps two years minimum practical experience before opening a box and training others? Seems logical to me.

This is a really good article by Patrick McCarty a friend of mine. I met Patrick a few years ago at the CrossFit Games, he writes frequently for Breaking Muscle.com. His philosophy is very similar to what we practice at Excel. We have always been big on continuous education and learning. We are pretty picky too about our process of bringing trainers up through ranks and making sure they get time assisting classes before actually coaching. Even the owners who have degrees in physical education are continually learning, attending training seminars, studying etc. A good example is the CrossFit’s coach’s prep course that Danny recently attended. Danny was actually evaluated by other top coaches on his training techniques. Nick recently signed up for the RKC instructor course in LA, RKC is considered by many as the Premier Kettlebell Certification Program. One other exciting announcement is Buddy being asked by CrossFit HQ to be on the HQ training staff as an instructor for their Gymnastic certs. We don’t usually announce to our members every time we go to a new cert or seminar, but we feel it’s important for our members to know that we continually strive to provide a top quality program that aligns with our Mission Statement.
The owners developed this Mission statement earlier this year. We will be posting this in a frame on the wall in the Lobby, as a reminder of CrossFit Excel’s core purpose.
